Ines Papert, the German climbing extraordinaire, traveled to Heilongjiang Province, China to climb ice buildings. Each year, the city of Harbin hosts the International Ice and Snow Festival to celebrate the bitter cold days of winter–better than sitting inside and playing board games, right? 12,000 workers spent 3 weeks building an entire ice city cut out of frozen chunks of the Songhua River.
It took Papert and her team over a year to acquire permission and plan for the trip, but the climbing she got to do was well worth the wait. Says Papert, “the towers glow from the inside…It’s completely surreal and far from reality. I’ve never experienced such a bizarre atmosphere before.”
